Route notes

### Where this route needs care

The sticking points we plan for on Shopify to BigCommerce.

Some planning

#### Wide products

BigCommerce caps the options and variants one product can carry, so very wide products are split or use modifiers.

Some planning

#### Pricing by group

Customer groups and price lists depend on the BigCommerce plan, so B2B pricing is checked against the plan first.

Plan early

#### Checkout changes

Shopify checkout extensions do not port; changes are rebuilt with BigCommerce’s checkout SDK or an app.

App audit

### Shopify apps BigCommerce replaces

The main reason stores make this move is the app bill. Here’s where the common Shopify apps usually land on BigCommerce, so you can see the saving before we quote.

Native features vary by BigCommerce plan. We check yours against the plan you would actually buy.
| On Shopify today | Typical Shopify setup | On BigCommerce |
| Product options | An options app for engraving, add-ons and personalisation. | Native Product modifiers: text fields, checkboxes and pick lists with price adjustments, built in. |
| Wholesale pricing | A wholesale app with tagged customers, or Shopify Plus B2B. | Native or B2B Edition Customer groups and price lists, depending on plan. B2B Edition adds company accounts, quotes and buyer portals. |
| Reviews | A review app. | Native Built-in product reviews. Many stores still keep a review app for photos and email requests. |
| Product specs | Metafields shown by the theme. | Native Custom fields on each product, plus metafields through the API for anything structured. |
| Brands | Vendor field and a collection per brand. | Native A brand entity with its own page, URL and logo. |
| Subscriptions | A subscription app. | App Still an app on BigCommerce. Subscriber cards move only if the payment provider supports it. |

SEO

### Every old URL, sent somewhere useful

Shopify nests every page under fixed folders. BigCommerce gives each product, category and brand its own custom URL, so most paths get shorter. Every 301 goes into BigCommerce’s redirect manager and is tested before DNS moves.

**Crawl before** Every indexed URL on the old store listed.

**Map and test** Each row checked before DNS moves.

**Titles kept** Page titles and meta copied where they rank.

**Crawl after** Compared, gaps fixed in the first weeks.

Risks

### Risks on a Shopify to BigCommerce migration

Specific to this route. Generic risks like downtime are covered by the rehearsal.

### High Products wider than BigCommerce allows

What goes wrong A Shopify product with many option combinations can exceed what one BigCommerce product carries.

What we do We check every product’s option count early. Wide ones are split, or minor choices become modifiers.

### Medium Checkout customisations not porting

What goes wrong Shopify checkout extensions and Functions don’t exist on BigCommerce.

What we do Each one is listed and rebuilt with BigCommerce’s checkout options, promotions or a checkout app, then tested with real baskets.

### Medium Plan limits on pricing features

What goes wrong Customer groups and price lists depend on the BigCommerce plan, and some stores find out after signing.

What we do We confirm the plan from your trade setup before you buy it.

### Low Tags losing their meaning

What goes wrong Shopify tags do many jobs at once: filters, collections, customer segments.

What we do We sort tags by job: some become categories, some customer groups, some custom fields, and the rest are dropped.

Working together

### What we need from you, and what you get each week

A migration is mostly our work, but a few decisions only you can make. Here’s the split.

#### Decisions, access and a few test orders

Admin access to Shopify and the new BigCommerce store, a list of apps you actually rely on, and someone who can answer “do we still need this?” within a day or two.

During the rehearsal, we ask you to place test orders, log in as a trade customer and check five products you know well. You’ll spot things no script can.

#### A short written update and a staging link

Every Friday you get what moved this week, what’s blocked and what we need from you, with a link to the staging store. There’s no dashboard to log in to.

Before cutover you get the full redirect map, the record counts per entity and a one-page plan for the night.

#### Fixes, crawls and Search Console

For two weeks after launch we fix anything that turns up, compare crawls and watch Search Console and the BigCommerce 404 log. After that, you can move to a [support plan](https://intelligizedigital.com/services/support-maintenance/) or take it in-house.

### Why move from Shopify to BigCommerce?

Usually for features that are built in rather than added by apps, such as customer groups, price lists and several storefronts from one back office. The audit compares the two for your store.

### Does BigCommerce charge transaction fees?

BigCommerce does not add its own transaction fee when you use a third-party payment gateway. Your gateway still charges its own fees.

### Do we need B2B Edition?

Only for full buyer portals. Customer groups and price lists cover many wholesale stores without it.

### Will customers need new passwords?

Yes. Password hashes cannot move between platforms, so customers get a reset invite.

### What happens to our Shopify apps?

Each one is checked: many become native BigCommerce features, the rest move to a marketplace app or custom code.

### Can we keep our Shopify product handles on BigCommerce?

Usually yes. BigCommerce lets each product have its own custom URL, so most product slugs stay the same and only the /products/ prefix drops away.

### Do Shopify metafields come across?

Yes. Simple display fields become BigCommerce custom fields; structured or filterable ones become metafields through the API.

### Should we use Stencil or Catalyst?

Stencil suits most stores and is quicker to build. Catalyst, BigCommerce’s headless storefront, makes sense if you have developers and need a custom front end.
