The real trade

### Shopify to WooCommerce: gains and trade-offs

On Shopify you rent a very good shop. On WooCommerce you own the building, and owning cuts both ways.

You gain the code, the database and the freedom to change anything: checkout fields, product logic, how content and products mix on one page. Monthly app fees often drop, because many Shopify apps have a one-off or free plugin equivalent. Content-heavy brands get WordPress’s editor, which is still the nicest place to write long pages.

You take on hosting, updates, backups and security. Someone has to update plugins every month and test the checkout after. If that someone is you at 11pm, it isn’t a saving. We usually pair this route with managed hosting from partners like [WP Engine](https://intelligizedigital.com/partners/wp-engine/) or [Nexcess](https://intelligizedigital.com/partners/nexcess/), and a monthly [care plan](https://intelligizedigital.com/services/support-maintenance/).

#### When we’d advise against it

If your team is small, your catalogue is standard and you’re mostly unhappy about one app’s price, stay on Shopify and swap the app. Moving platform to save a monthly fee rarely adds up once you count hosting and maintenance.

On Shopify you rent a very good shop. On WooCommerce you own the building, roof included.

How we explain this route

Route notes

### Where this route needs care

The sticking points we plan for on Shopify to WooCommerce.

Plan early

#### Hosting becomes yours

Shopify ran the servers; now someone has to. We set up managed WordPress hosting with backups, caching and updates.

Some planning

#### Gift cards and store credit

Codes cannot be exported whole, so balances are re-issued and customers are told before launch.

Plan early

#### Subscriptions

Saved cards move only where the payment provider supports a token migration; otherwise subscribers confirm their details again.

What you now own

### Jobs Shopify did that become yours

None of these are hard, but each needs an owner and a calendar slot. We set them all up before launch.

Hosting

#### Servers sized for your traffic, not the average

We pick managed WordPress hosting with staging, daily backups and server caching, sized for your peak day, not a quiet Tuesday. A store doing a big sale on a cheap shared host is the most common WooCommerce failure we’re called in to fix.

Updates

#### Monthly

Core, WooCommerce and plugins updated on staging first, checkout tested, then pushed live.

1× a month

Security

#### Firewall and logins

A web application firewall, two-factor logins for admins and limited admin accounts.

Payments

#### PCI handled by the gateway

Stripe, PayPal or WooPayments take the card details, so card data never touches your server.

Speed

#### Caching that respects carts

Pages cached, cart and checkout left alone, images served in modern formats.

Backups

#### Restores you’ve actually tested

Daily backups are only useful if a restore works. We test one before launch and write down how.

Emails

#### Order emails that arrive

WordPress sends email badly by default. We route order emails through a proper sending service and check they land in inboxes.

SEO

### Every old URL, sent somewhere useful

Shopify paths are fixed: /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/. WooCommerce lets us choose the permalinks, so we keep them short and send each old Shopify address to its new home with a server-level 301.

**Crawl before** Every indexed URL on the old store listed.

**Map and test** Each row checked before DNS moves.

**Titles kept** Page titles and meta copied where they rank.

**Crawl after** Compared, gaps fixed in the first weeks.

Cutover

### Cutover night, rehearsed first

T−7 days

#### Rehearsal

Full test move onto the new host, signed off.

T−2 h

#### Freeze

Shopify checkout paused at your quietest hour.

T−1 h

#### Final delta

Orders and customers since the rehearsal moved across.

T 0

#### Domain

DNS pointed at the new host, SSL issued, redirects live.

T+1 h

#### Checks

Test orders, payment, emails and the crawl compared.

Common mistakes

### Shopify to WooCommerce mistakes that cost the most

Flip each card for the cost and the fix.

Mistake 01

#### Copying the Shopify URL structure blindly

Setting WooCommerce permalinks to imitate /products/ and /collections/ feels safe.

**What it costs, and the fix**

It can work, but nested Shopify paths like /collections/mugs/products/blue-mug still need redirects. We decide the permalink scheme on purpose and redirect every variation.

Mistake 02

#### Choosing hosting on price

A cheap shared plan looks fine with no traffic on staging.

**What it costs, and the fix**

It falls over on the first email campaign. We size hosting from your real peak traffic and order volume.

Mistake 03

#### Installing a plugin for every app

Each Shopify app gets a plugin twin, so the new store starts with 50 plugins.

**What it costs, and the fix**

Slow pages and monthly update risk. We match on the job each app does, and often one plugin or a few lines of code covers three apps.

Mistake 04

#### Forgetting Shopify Flow

Flow workflows ran in the background: tagging VIPs, alerting on low stock, hiding sold-out items.

**What it costs, and the fix**

They stop on launch day and nobody notices for weeks. We list each Flow and rebuild it as a scheduled action or webhook.

Mistake 05

#### Leaving gift card balances behind

Shopify gift card codes can’t be exported whole.

**What it costs, and the fix**

Customers turn up with a code that doesn’t work. We export live balances and re-issue them in a WooCommerce gift card plugin, with an email first.

Mistake 06

#### No plan for updates

Launch day is treated as the finish line.

**What it costs, and the fix**

Six months later a plugin update breaks checkout. We agree an update routine and owner before launch.

An add-on installed on your own site, the WordPress version of a Shopify app. You update it yourself.

WordPress Block theme

A modern WordPress theme edited with blocks in the site editor, much like Shopify sections.

### Why would a store leave Shopify for WooCommerce?

Usually for control: owning the code and data, fewer monthly app fees, or a content-heavy site that already lives in WordPress. The audit will tell you if staying on Shopify is the better call.

### Where will the store be hosted?

On managed WordPress hosting. Intelligize Digital is a WP Engine and Nexcess partner, or we can set it up on a host you already use.

### Can we keep Shopify Payments rates?

No. Shopify Payments only works on Shopify. We set up Stripe, PayPal or WooPayments and compare the fees in the audit.

### Will customers need new passwords?

Yes. Password hashes cannot move between platforms, so customers get a branded invite and set a new password in one step.

### What happens to our Shopify apps?

Every app is listed in the audit and matched to a plugin, a WooCommerce feature or custom code.

### Can WooCommerce keep our Shopify URLs?

Partly. WooCommerce permalinks are configurable, so product and category bases can be set close to Shopify’s. Nested and variant URLs still need 301 redirects, which we map one by one.

### What replaces Shopify Flow?

Scheduled actions, webhooks or a small custom plugin, depending on the workflow. Each Flow is listed in the audit and rebuilt or retired.

### Who updates WooCommerce after launch?

You can, or we can on a monthly care plan. Either way, updates go to a staging site first and the checkout is tested before anything goes live.

### Will our store be slower on WooCommerce?

It doesn’t have to be. With managed hosting, page caching and a lean block theme, WooCommerce stores load quickly. The common cause of slow stores is cheap hosting and too many plugins.
